In Portugal, the law that regulates the organisation and functioning of these services permits the contracting of specialised external companies, certified by the General Health Directorate.
It is obligatory, in Portuguese law, that Occupational Health consultations are included in the following categories, transcribed from the 3/2014 law decree of the 28th of January:
• Admission exams, before commencing work or, if there is a justified reason for urgency of admission, within the first 15 days.
• Periodic exams, annually for the underage or employees of more than 50 years of age, and every two years for the rest of the work force.
• Occasional exams, whenever there are substantial alterations of the working materials and equipment used that could have negative repercussions on employee health, as well as in the case of a return to work after an absence of more than 30 days due to illness or accident.
Other services of diagnostic and preventative medicine can be associated with this occupational medicine service as well as vaccination programmes, check-up packages, nutritional consultations and other complementary services.
